Well, it happened, as it was bound to...Hayden had his first major injury. We went out to Bothell Landing to meet a few friends there today. The kids played on the playground and had a great time. Then we decided to take a walk over to the bridge that crosses the slough. The kids were throwing rocks and leaves off the edge into the water and having a good ole time. Then Hayden started walking down the other side of the bridge towards the trail. Innocent enough, right. A nice little stroll on the bridge....lovely. Then as the bridge started to arch more steeply downward, Hayden started picking up speed...he began to walk faster and faster and then broke into a run. A run that his tiny little legs have never seen before. So fast, so very fast. He was too far ahead of me by this point for me to even try to catch him. All I could do was watch and cringe.

He actually did quite well keeping his feet moving and remaining upright. Until his feet hit the asphalt that is. As soon as the ground flattened out, he bit it....hard. :-( I finally caught up to him and scooped him up...there was some blood. His nose looked like it caught the brunt of it. He had a bloody lip and tip of his nose and was pretty scraped up. He only cried a little really, and it could have been A LOT worse. I mean, he was really going fast. His nose stopped bleeding fairly quickly, and he was left with a pretty good scrape with little pieces of asphalt in it.

I put Neosporin on it as soon as we got home. Tonight before we put him to bed, I gave him another once over. The scrapes on the rest of his face were starting to show more (they were a lot more road rashy looking than right after it happened). He basically looks like he was in a bar fight. UGH... I feel like such a horrible mommy. I should have been holding his hand while he walked on the bridge.

Pictures to follow after he wakes up tomorrow morning... -- mam
