So why does such an elementary response from a child conjure up so much debate on how to deal with it? Do you spank? Do you ignore it? Do you let the child walk all over you? I think it comes down to patience. How much of it do you have that day. Hopefully, every day you have tons...maybe even some to spare for the next mom who's running a little low at the moment. But, that's not always going to be the case. So, on days when you don't have much, or you've used up even the reserves...try and remember it is only a phase and this too shall pass (where have we heard that before?). Pick your battles.
I try and think how frustrating it must be to be a little person. Everyone always telling you what to do and when and how to do it. Yuck...no one likes a bully. Pick on someone your own size. So maybe during this phase of development it is ok if it takes them 10 minutes to get up the stairs because they are stopping on each one to pick at the carpet or hand you a fuzz or test the strength of each spindle. Marvel in their appreciation of the little things. Guide them gently. Surely don't let them turn into a tyrant who runs the house, but at least let them explore and navigate the world around them at their own pace sometimes and support their innocent curiosities in even the smallest things.
Sure, that's what I say today...we'll see how much patience I have tomorrow! -- mam
